Wayne Clough Is the secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, the worlds largest museum and research complex. Since becoming secretary in July 2008, Dr. Clough has overseen the development of a comprehensive strategic plan with a focus on four grand challenges unlocking the mysteries of the universe, understanding and sustaining a biodiverse planet, valuing world cultures and understanding the American experience.Before his appointment to the Smithsonian, Dr. Clough was president of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Earlier, he taught and held administrative positions at Duke University, Stanford University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Virginia Tech and the University of Washington in Seattle.Dr. Clough has served as chair of the National Academy of Engineering/National Research Council Committee on New Orleans Regional Hurricane Protection Reconstruction, as member of the National Science Board, and as a member of Presidents Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.He currently serves on the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) Commission on the Future of Humanities and Social Sciences.Dr. Clough received his bachelors and masters degrees in civil engineering from Georgia Tech, and he earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.To read more about other ASME honorees, click here.
